Today's journal question was to write three questions that the students would want to ask me in an interview. Afterward, the students took turns asking me questions about myself. I think it was a really enjoyable activity and I definitely think that the students are becoming more and more comfortable with me. I was really grateful that Ms. Harris let me carry out that idea. I will post the questions that the students asked and the audio recording later!
I feel like I am finally getting to know the students better! I started continuing the challenges that I used to do with my first grade students. I worked with Abu today because I sensed that he thought the math homework was very easy. I hadn't interacted with him much before today, but I think he was definitely excited about learning more difficult fraction problems. We worked on adding fractions with unlike denominators and after a few examples I think he understood the multiplying to get the same denominator idea. What he really seemed to pick up on was the improper fraction into a mixed number. I will have to do some more checks for understanding though because I worry that he was just picking up on the procedure and pattern. Ms. Harris also let me take over the show for the voting process today. It went okay. I had to ask the students to stay focus a couple of times and had to wait until they quieted down. I could tell that some students were frustrated with their classmates. Overall, I think it was okay. I will definitely need to start doing more whole class things because at this point they seem to really listen to and respect Ms. Harris (although they were a little chatty for her today too), but not always the specials teachers.
