I feel like I am finally getting to know the students better!
I started continuing the challenges that I used to do with my first grade students. I worked with Abu today because I sensed that he thought the math homework was very easy. I hadn't interacted with him much before today, but I think he was definitely excited about learning more difficult fraction problems. We worked on adding fractions with unlike denominators and after a few examples I think he understood the multiplying to get the same denominator idea. What he really seemed to pick up on was the improper fraction into a mixed number. I will have to do some more checks for understanding though because I worry that he was just picking up on the procedure and pattern.
Ms. Harris also let me take over the show for the voting process today. It went okay. I had to ask the students to stay focus a couple of times and had to wait until they quieted down. I could tell that some students were frustrated with their classmates. Overall, I think it was okay. I will definitely need to start doing more whole class things because at this point they seem to really listen to and respect Ms. Harris (although they were a little chatty for her today too), but not always the specials teachers.
